A Mindful Walk — Emptiness, Fullness & Gratitude
Finding stillness, presence, and connection with the natural world.
Yesterday, I took a mindful hike through the mountains at Lupin Lodge.
The recent rain had softened the earth. With each step, I could feel the ground beneath my feet, as though my feet were kissing the earth — a beautiful expression inspired by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh.
There was no destination to reach. No pace to maintain. No performance to measure.
Just walking. Breathing. Being.
No phone. No photographs to capture the moment.
Nothing between myself and the experience.
The moment didn’t need to be captured. It simply needed to be lived.
I stopped often.
Listening to the different patterns of wind moving through the trees. Some gentle, almost whispering. Others stronger, creating their own rhythms through the branches and leaves.
Breathing in the rich scent of the damp earth and bay leaves.
Not simply looking – but truly seeing.
The countless shades of green spreading across the mountains. Wisps of clouds drifting through the sky. Birds singing, each with its own voice.
And within it all, a profound stillness.
The emptiness of a quiet mind. The fullness of Mother Earth and Father Sky.
No monkey mind jumping from thought to thought.
No need to analyze, accomplish, or anticipate what comes next.
Simply being present.
When Emptiness Becomes Fullness
In our daily lives, we are often surrounded by constant activity, information, responsibilities, and distractions.
Even our attempts to relax can become another thing to accomplish.
Yet nature offers us something different.
An opportunity to slow down, soften our attention, and experience life through all our senses.
To feel the earth beneath our feet.
To listen without needing to identify every sound.
To see without judgment.
To breathe without forcing.
To move without unnecessary tension.
When the mind becomes quiet, we begin to notice how much is already here.
The apparent emptiness is not a lack of anything.
It is spaciousness.
And within that spaciousness, there is fullness.
An Invitation to Practice
The next time you step outside, perhaps for a walk through your neighborhood, a park, or a mountain trail, consider giving yourself a few moments without a destination or agenda.
Perhaps leave your phone behind if circumstances allow.
Feel each foot meet the earth.
Notice the quality of your breathing.
Listen to the sounds around you.
Allow your eyes to soften and take in the colors, shapes, light, and movement.
There is nothing special you need to achieve.
No perfect technique.
No right or wrong experience.
Simply an opportunity to reconnect with yourself and the natural world.
Emptiness. Fullness. Presence. Gratitude.
Sometimes, the most meaningful practice is simply remembering how to be here.
