Athletic Performance & Training at the Threshold of Sports Evolution
HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC TRAINING
Our approach to high school athletic training here at Comprehensive Athletic Training (CAT) is based upon a foundation of respect and trust – built from day one.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING COACH
Coach Holland gave me a direction in my physical fitness that was custom tailored to my physical needs and my goals in golf. He played an instrumental part of preparing me for college golf. The training in high school gave me an upper hand once I got to college. Now, I currently hold the highest certification in Golf for the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI).
The programs and exercises that Coach a Holland prescribed years ago, are very similar to the fitness programs of the TPI, that are built for rotational athlete. I would highly recommend Coach Holland to anyone who is looking for results in their sports performance.
I have worked with Michael and have been utilizing his Comprehensive Athletic Training program since my sophomore year of college in 2013. His holistic modalities propelled me to tap into my full potential on and off the playing field. I graduated with my Bachelors degree in exercise science. I was selected as an ALL-American QB for my NAIA college. Prior to college I battled back from injuries using eastern modalities that western medicine could not provide for me. Michael provides the mind, body, and soul with exercises that puts you in a state of harmony which transfers to an overall better performance. Coach Holland also deepened my knowledge of Qigong by teaching me practices that translated to improved athletic performance, while keeping me injury free. I continue to incorporate these practices into my daily life, and they definitely help keep me healthy and fit.
As a former collegiate athlete that was unwilling to slow down or pay much attention to the stress I put on my body, I incurred a series of injuries through my late 20s and into my early 30s that ultimately resulted in a severe grade 3 ankle sprain with considerable tissue damage.
After I was advised that surgery was inevitable, I was put in touch with Michael who gave me a better alternative. Through his comprehensive program that addressed my injury from a physical, mental and nutritional standpoint, I was able to not just recover, but improve my athletic performance with no surgical intervention.
Michael helped me understand the connections of my prior injuries and showed me a better way to train and prepare (both physically and mentally) for the athletic goals that I still have. His approach focuses on sustainability and teaches you ways to nourish your body and mind. I can’t thank him enough for the tools that I now have to improve performance, prevent future injuries and manage stress. Remember the mantra – Regression, Recovery, Integration, Progression. THANK YOU MICHAEL!!
Qigong has provided me with a mental framework with which to face the day and its unexpected events with a greater degree of calmness. I would like to share with you what has for me been a very unexpected benefit. I was a competitive swimmer for many years through high school and college. I realized recently, after one of our sessions, that the practice of Qigong has improved how I breathe when I swim the crawl. As a result of the Qigong you taught me, and the specific breathing patterns I learned in the process, I was automatically using those same breathing patterns while swimming. I am now able to swim much more easily and efficiently—and it has enabled me to swim for a significantly longer time. Many thanks!
Michael Holland has been my Personal Trainer and Health Coach for close to 10 years. He has helped me resolve various back, neck and shoulder issues, as well as increase my strength, core function, flexibility and improve my balance. He recently created a deep water pool workout that is challenging, safe and helps to keep me injury free.
His knowledge and diversity of western and eastern methods gives him the tools to create, and adapt specific ‘personal training programs’ that consistently meet my diverse needs. I worked with many trainers before Michael, but none were as attentive, diverse and passionate as he is.
We started working with Michael when Derek was 10 and speed was an issue for his performance in sports. His technique was wrong and he needed to relearn how to run correctly. Derek now matches the speed of some of the fasted kids in his sport. In addition his mental focus is far better and all with an attitude of focus, fun, and I can do this.
I am a long time runner, now in my 40s, though I once competed on the national collegiate level and I have had various injuries in my history. I met Michael and was impressed by his presence and wisdom and patience in addressing and sharing healing modalities for a unique foot ailment I had.
Michael also has coached me and helped me to slowly heal a shoulder injury I received while surfing. He walked me through a sequence of small movements-Somatic Repatterning-then with the use of small weights to regain strength and to also allow my healing shoulder to remain relaxed and at ease and to reset the pathways of my mind and body to not expect pain after healing.
Many, many times he counseled me and coached me on the merits of correct sport specific training, rest and recovery and being patient with myself and allowing my body to heal before going out and surfing or running. His care and advice and experience in sustainable healing have been invaluable.
I am now doing Triathlon training-running regularly, swimming and biking and there are no issues with my foot or shoulder.
This past year I was seriously injured with a strained groin towards the end of my senior year track season. The injury rendered me incapable of competing in the 200 meters. Michael Holland was instrumental on my road to recovery – providing me with the support and guidance that I needed to heal and strengthen an injured body and spirit. Through working with him, I was able to run again, and faster than I had before. In a short span of the summer I went from walking to jogging to running without pain. Now I look forward to a bright career in collegiate athletics, running for the University of California, San Diego. This is all thanks to Michael’s dedication and support of all facets of healing, from catering to the tangibility of the body to the ethereal yet equally important temperament of the spirit. 2009 – 200m-21.86
Michael’s eclectic professional and personal experience brings the synergy of the athlete and coach into a rare reality of athletic training based on respect. Our first training with Michael set up an immediate relationship of respect. He listens to Jeremy and quickly connects with him, getting to know my son, where he is now as an athlete and what brought him to this point to empower him on his journey. Michael’s detailed attention to body mechanics, at every training, has enabled my son with skills that cross over into every sport giving him greater access to show up in his natural abilities as an athlete. Michael brings the missing link in coaching and training to the athletic experience.
I have always loved running. I was a cross country runner in college, but I never felt that I had the potential to grow as a runner. Working with Coach Holland, I have gained a sense of awareness of correct running form and how to nourish both my mind and my body to achieve optimal results. I now realize that I have the potential to be a competitive runner. I am currently in training for the Women’s Nike Full Marathon with the goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon.
