During this event we are constantly reminded of the seriousness of it, the global numbers of those infected with the Corona-virus, the daily deaths, job layoffs, and new shelter in place restrictions. So much uncertainty, which leads to a big jump in anxiety, and daily fear. This is a recipe for stress overload and a vastly weakened immune system.

In my humble opinion, as well as other mental health specialists, it is time to minimize watching the news. Keep it 10-15 minutes in the am and pm. Watch funny programs or movies and laugh more. View positive and uplifting documentaries. Read books. Listen to your favorite music regularly. Do things and activities you have not had time for.

If you are able to walk outdoors really listen to the different birds, the sound of the wind as it rustles through the trees. Notice all the different types, sizes, shapes, and colors of the flowers, plants, trees, and clouds, and colors of the sky.

Do a seated or walking meditation. Develop a tai chi and or qigong practice. Start doing yoga postures. Begin a stretching routine. Learn new breathing techniques that help to clam the mind and nervous system. Learn to play a musical instrument.

With this new found time we have with the shelter in place mandate, we each have the opportunity to slow down, reevaluate our health and fitness priorities, and life goals…

With gratitude and aloha,
Michael
