How we walk, where we walk, why we walk tells the world who and what we are. Whether it’s once a day to the car, or for long weekend hikes, or as competition, or as art, walking is a profoundly universal aspect of what makes us humans, social creatures, and engaged with the world”. Geoff Nicholson.
he world.

Walking today for the most part has become a rather mundane activity and has lost a lot of its power and magic. I am not advocating one should stop walking or talking while taking a walk. Rather I am suggesting exploring different walking practices.

Here are a few ‘Art of Walking’ practices:

  • without talking – breathe in 4 ct-exhale 8ct and repeat throughout
  • still the mind – bring your attention to your breath
  • in nature just listen to the various sounds
  • notice all the different colors
  • how many different smells are there
  • differences between an am and pm walk
  • observe how wildlife acts and moves
  • move in different directions as you walk
  • walk on different terrains
  • interval walking – vary the pace

Walking has long been touted and proven to be one of the most complete health and fitness activities that one can do.

“Walking is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug,” in the words of Dr. Thomas Frieden, former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
